When Jesus walked on the sea of Galilee, a great storm was in progress. The disciples were straining at the oars but getting nowhere.
But when the Lord appeared no more mention is made of their rowing. Their only concern was whether it was really Him or whether it was a ghost, and they were afraid.
But His words. Oh, His words. What wonderful words to hear in the midst of raging storm and terror. "Be of good cheer. It is I. Do not be afraid."
Glory!!
We all know what happened next when Peter said, "if it's you, command me to come to you on the water." And Jesus bid him, "Come."
In the middle of the storm Jesus told Peter to walk on water.
In the middle of the storm.
Not in the time of peace.
Not in the time when everything was easy.
No.
In the time when the wind and the waves threatened Peter's life even if he stayed in the boat.
In the middle of the storm.
The Lord is not telling us to wait until the storm is over to exercise faith.
He is calling us to come to Him on the water in the midst of something that threatens to destroy.
And Peter went, His eyes fixed on the One who told him, "come."
It was only when Peter allowed himself to look at the storm that he began to sink and had to call on the Lord to rescue him.
Our eyes must be fixed only on Jesus.
Our ears must be attentive only to His word.
Our actions must only be in obedience to His call.
And we will be those who walk on the water in the middle of the storm, to the glory and praise of our wonderful Lord and Saviour, Jesus.
So praise Him, adore Him, worship Him.
As the song goes:
"Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth shall grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace."
